A community-based vocational and independent living training program helping aspiring young adults with unique intellectual and developmental barriers in the workforce encounter sustainable employment
Individuals with disabilities continue to face significant barriers to employment and are much more likely to be unemployed or underemployed than people without disabilities. The Department of Developmental Services reported that in 2017, only 14.5% or working-aged people with developmental disabilities were employed (2019 Report of the Employment First Committee, 2020).
Danny is an aspiring young man with Autism facing these and other barriers to employment. Engaging with Wide Horizons, Inc., he is learning to have a “voice” and a place as a valued participant in the workforce and society. He is expanding his vocational opportunities by leveraging valuable work experiences to become a contributor to society. Augmentative and Alternative Communication methods, supportive employers, and a team of committed parents, community partners and professionals are helping Danny to unleash his potential and bring value to the workplace. This video is how he is obliterating barriers to employment and becoming a community hero.
